BLACKROOTS

Long ago, a small cult devoted itself to protecting humanity from dark forces. To keep the world safe, they used forbidden knowledge. In their search for greater power, they discovered the name Ul'vorran.

Some members strayed from the path. They desired to form a pact with Ul'vorran in exchange for power. To bring Ul'vorran back into the world, they performed a ritual beneath the most ancient tree in existence.

Others opposed this, for they knew the truth. They understood that Ul'vorran would not keep his word and would bring only greater darkness into the world. When they realized they could no longer stop the ritual, they dedicated themselves to fighting this power. They separated from the others and formed their own order.

Those who bound themselves to the ritual in pursuit of power were consumed by it. Now, Ul'vorran spreads his influence through the pacts he makes with those he deceives. Wherever a pact is made, black roots begin to grow. These roots spread from that point, tearing through the earth and corrupting everything they touch.

For centuries, this order has fought against Ul'vorran. Each generation passes this duty on to the next.
